Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and more than a dozen people sustained injuries in an apparently deliberate gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation took place as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the residence close to the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals got detained at the scene and a third person who ran away following the incident was found not long after. All three have been taken to hospital.

The blast could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location revealed the property reduced to a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the property was under an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect a family member set off the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation directly hit our officers,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the site, the minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

He believed the explosion had taken place on a story above the access point and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he revealed members had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being opened”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told Italian media, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
